Last night was my first ever assignment for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. I had contacted them earlier in the summer to let them know I was available for high school football and other freelance work this fall, and earlier in the week they followed up with me.
This was my first high school game with my big lens and I was pretty happy with the results. You’ll notice the photos look a lot cleaner/less noisy than last year’s photos. That is because I was using my personal gear this time around which handles low light better than the D200 and D2H that I had been using while I was at the post. It also let me shoot at 3200 ISO which is a full stop higher than the 1600 I had been limited to before. Hooray for 1/500 sec. shutter speeds. It makes a world of difference.
Before the game started I encountered some FTP problems. That kind of had me scrambling, and it threw me off a bit. There are some shots I wish I had submitted, but I missed since I was more concerned with how to actually get the photos turned in by my three different deadlines (before the game, halftime and after the game).
Next week should go smoother though and I’m looking forward to it. Also, the weather early yesterday was nasty. Heavy rain had me a bit anxious, but thankfully it cleared up by kick off and was beautiful all night. The only bad thing to happen was that I kneeled down in a pile of ants without realizing it because the hill was hidden under the grass. I looked down and saw my leg swarming with the buggers. I got bit, but its not too bad or painful right now.

Those were really great. Thanks for taking me back to those great games I enjoyed at Collins Hill. I’m glad you got a picture of the whopper king. That tradition has been around since about 1995. Congratulations on getting a job with the AJC as well :)
where are you taking pictures this weekend
great shots
Great pictures! what camera, lense and setting for your night shots?
I shoot football with a Canon 1d mIII and a 400 f/2.8 lens. For night high school games I’m usually shooting at ISO 3200 at 1/500 of a second.
