On Saturday I shot the second-to-last home game for Georgia Tech as they took on the Miami Hurricanes. What was supposed to be the biggest home game of the season for Tech turned out to be a dud as Tech’s poor performance during the year combined with an injury to their starting quarterback Joshua Nesbitt along with a sidelined quarterback for the Hurricanes led to what amounted to “The Backup Bowl.”
I’d had this game circled on my calendar all season though for another reason. Last year I came up with an idea for a photo I wanted to do. The plan was to mount a camera with a fisheye lens to the front of the Ramblin Wreck facing back towards the driver in hopes of getting the cheerleaders, the car, the stands and possibly the skyline all in one shot. While the shot I had in my head did in fact come to fruition at the game with the thanks of Wreck driver Austin Berry (photos of the rig tomorrow), having gone through the process once now I have a new goal for next year to improve on the shot.
Anyway, Tech’s offense was almost completely blocked out of the end zone for the game and Miami rolled winning 35-10. Tech takes on Duke next week, a game they should have won handily before the season started, but now I’m not sure. If Tech does in fact lose, the game versus Georgia (which I’ll be shooting in Athens) it sets up a state rivalry game that will determine which of the two teams goes to a bowl game this year. Important, but not for the reason either team hoped coming into the season.
